The creation of Art Administrations' Birthday, an annual celebration *see 'Art Administrations' Birthday, February 19th' page, or link below http://virtualartistsalliance.blogspot.ca/2007/02/february-19th-is-art-administrations.html
Exchange Agreement, 2008
On display in the administrative office of the Khyber ICA from January 17th (Art's Birthday) to February 19th (Art Administrations' Birthday) 2008 was a work by BL MacNevin. The piece consists of two buckets linked together, a bucket of dirt and the sponge in a bucket of water from the Birth of Art and the Birth of Art Administration. The bucket of dirt refers to the work by Allan Kaprow in which he exchanged the dirt in his bucket, i.e. he offered you his bucket of dirt to be replaced by your dirt, each new dirt held a story, the bucket functioned as a container for exchange like an art gallery. This bucket of dirt is a representation of Allan Kaprow's bucket of dirt and is linked to a representation of Robert Filliou's 'art object' from the Birth of Art.
As fundraiser for the Khyber Arts Society, this work is entitled Exchange Agreement; the value required for this work is $10,000, the amount now needed by the society to cover a deficit in this year's budget. The Khyber Arts Society can offer a non-profit association charitable status tax receipt for the patronage. (BL January 2008) PS - The dirt in the bucket, which I still have, was from the basement of the Khyber building, gathered from the dirt floor along the basement wall (so this dirt has small pieces of brick in it that fell off the Khyber's basement brick wall over time)... the sale price of this work still stands, the money will go to the Khyber towards their exhibition programming budget. Art Administrations' Birthday
Robert Filliou believed that art was a "verb", he said that art's birth occurred a million years ago "when a dry sponge was dropped into a bucket of water". This "action", the dropping the dry sponge into the bucket of water, was art's beginning, he dated it on a January 17th. Art administration deals mainly with art as a "noun" (i.e. the objects). A few years ago being involved in art administration I thought it would be a good idea to celebrate 'Art Administrations' Birthday'.* It of course occurs after "Art's Birthday", a little over a month after "Art's Birthday" on February 19th (my son Emmett's birthday) I declared was 'Art Administrations' Birthday', it was the day a million years or so ago when the saturated sponge was found floating in a bucket of water by an art administrator. So began 'Art Administration', which celebrates art, the "noun" (like the saturated sponge floating in a bucket of water) and so a little over a month after “Art’s Birthday” (January 17th) just under a million years ago, the object (the sponge in a bucket of water) from the “Birth of Art” was discovered, labeled artwork, acquistitioned, evaluated, documented, conserved/cared for, placed on exhibit and pedagogically interpreted. |

The International Zone The Naming of the Lunenburg Waterfront
Heritage as Culture gets exaggerated in Nova Scotia where mythologies are sustained and perpetuated by Governments’ Public Cultural Funding Revenues that prioritize Heritage as tourist entertainment over Current Art. What if the majority of this revenue was not siphoned off into the "Tourism Industry" on projects like the Bluenose II, but instead disseminated to individual artists and small arts & cultural groups in Nova Scotia?

2001 - At that time I taught in Calgary September through April each year, but summers I would always return to the south shore of Nova Scotia. So regarding the ICA•RDI idea, it wintered out west from 2001 to 2007 becoming active again each summer. The winters 2007/08 and 2008/09 were spent in Halifax working at the Khyber as Artistic Director, but again in the summers ICA•RDI actions occurred in Lunenburg. ICA•RDI has remained on the south shore of Nova Scotia since the winter 2009/10, which was spent at Dawson House, Bridgewater and since then, winters 2010/11 to the present, ICA•RDI has occupied the first floor of a heritage house on King Street, Bridgewater where it continues the ongoing promotion of the ICA•RDI proposition for Lunenburg. |

ICA•RDI early development: The proposition was first conceived in 2001, with the first draft proposal presented at a formal meeting with Lunenburg Academy officials, that took place at the Lunenburg Academy summer 2002. The proposition in its early stages was developed with the assistance of Ian Murray, Pictou/Toronto artist, David Jones, Halifax art consultant and Iain MacLeod, Halifax writer. White Shirt & Tie Wall (for Garry), ICA•RDI Dawson House studio, 2009
I use to work at the Khyber as Artistic Director, to give a sense of professionalism to the position I wore a white shirt and tie. So every time I visited a 2nd hand clothing store I would purchase one or two 100% cotton white shirts and ties. The White Shirt & Tie Wall (for Garry) is 27 of the purchases that I made and wore while working at the Khyber. |
